F1: Abu Dhabi Finale Finnish, Bottas, Hamilton, Vettel 1-2-3
Valtteri Bottas won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Sunday as MercedesAMG wrapped up another triumphant F1 season with a 1-2 finish and 4X world champion Lewis Hamilton settled for 2nd.
The win was a career 3rd for Mr Bottas, who had started on The Pole position and stayed in front to deny Hamilton a 10th success of the 20-race campaign.
“It’s a really important win for me after having a pretty difficult start to the 2nd half of the year,” said Mr. Bottas, who joined Mercedes after Y 2016 champion Nico Rosberg retired at the close of Y 2016’s season.
“This weekend, pole and win, I couldn’t be happier to end the season like this.”
In a processional race, with very little excitement under the Yas Marina floodlights, Ferrari’s (NYSE:RACE) Sebastian Vettel took 3rd place to finish runner-up in a championship that Hamilton won in Mexico last month.
The final points tally was Messrs Hamilton 363, Vettel 317 and Bottas 305.
MercedesAMG had already won the constructors’ world championship for the 4th year running, and ended with 668 points to Ferrari’s 522. The 1-2 finish was their 4th of the season.
Mr. Bottas managed the procession ceding the lead to Mr. Hamilton only when he pitted 1st, with no major issues.
He took the Chequered Flag 3.8 secs clear of his team mate, who had been within a sec at one point. Mr. Vettel was 19 secs away.
”After 3, 4 or 5 laps I couldn’t go any faster and from then it was pretty lonely,“ said Mr. Vettel, a 3X winner in Abu Dhabi. ”In the 2nd part of the race we had a stronger pace but not good enough.
“Very much congratulations to Lewis on his season, he deserves to win the championship this year in the end. I hate to say it, but he was the better man. I am sure we will do our bit over the winter and hopefully come back stronger.”
The old F1 logo also made its final appearance, the sport’s new owners presenting a new 1 as part of a bigger re-branding to come.
The new design was created by branding agency Wieden and Kennedy London. It is intended to reflect the style of a Formula One car: “flat, low to the ground and with a suggestion of speed”.
Some people are grumbling. I like it!
