Below are the Big Q’s and the Big A’s about CBD

What do we know about CBD oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 60 naturally occurring cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. It´s very different than tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—the main psychoactive component of cannabis responsible for inducing a “high“ sensation or the euphoria which can be habit-forming. CBD, on the other hand, is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that can be consumed in large doses without altering a person’s mental status.

CBD oil is known mainly because of its anxiolytic, antidepressant, antipsychotic, anticonvulsive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, pain relieving and neuroprotective properties.

How is CBD extracted from cannabis sativa?

Ethanol and CO2 extraction are the most commonly used methods for extracting cannabinoids from cannabis sativa plant. CO2 extraction is used to extract smaller quantities of cannabinoids at different temperatures and pressures, while ethanol extraction is typically used to extract larger quantities of the same substance via a process known as reversed osmosis. In the next step of the extraction process, hemp has to undergo another process called chromatography, which is done to remove many unwanted phytochemicals that can be found in the plant. Using olive oil is also a rarer, but simpler method to extract cannabinoids.

How does CBD oil work?

CBD targets the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is in the nervous system, and includes the cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1), although there are other known targets within the nervous system. CBD and THC both compete to bind with CB1 and CB2 receptors. This means that when CBD is consumed, the receptors are “blocked“ by CBD. As a result, similar molecules are unable to bind to those same receptors. This blockage essentially prevents the nervous system’s receptors from being overly activated. Therefore, it can be said that CBD, seemingly, protects both the nervous and immune system from everyday stress.

Is CBD oil safe?

Consuming CBD oil has never put anyone at risk since there is no risk of intoxication or getting “high.” Frequently, people are concerned about the stigma associated with consuming a cannabis-related compound. The aroma of CBD oil is incredibly mild. No one should feel any shame for consuming it, as it can be used with discretion at home, at work or really in any social environment since there’s absolutely no psychotropic effect.

In June 2018, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a highly purified form of CBD which will be used to treat seizures and epilepsy. In addition to treating disorders like epilepsy, CBD oil can treat other medical conditions like Parkinson’s disease, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia. This is all supported by a certain degree of clinical proof.

Use of CBD oil is already quite ubiquitous, and many artisanal preparations of CBD are available on the market because people cannot ignore its health benefits any longer—this is in sharp contrast with the detrimental effects of pharmaceutical drugs. Unfortunately, many pharmaceutical companies have modified cannabinoids to create synthetic analogs. These synthetic drugs contain little benefit to a person’s health when comparing it side by side with natural CBD. Cannabis plants acquired from uncontrolled sources, which have possibly been contaminated by pesticides is quite likely to be an issue in the near future. Therefore, it is crucial to purchase CBD oil from a reliable source, in its most unadulterated form. Additionally, it would not hurt to be familiar with the extraction method and the GMP grade of the CBD.

Early childhood exposure to THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids can have lasting effects on memory and brain development.
