Donald Trump Leads Media to Record Ratings
US President Elect Donald Trump’s candidacy gave Fox News, CNN and MSNBC their best ratings year ever, with each outlet posting record-breaking numbers
Fox News (NASDAQ:FoX) topped its cable rivals in Y 2016, finishing as the most-watched basic cable network in both primetime and total day for the 1st time in its 20-year history, the outlet reported. In primetime, Fox News averaged 2.4-M viewers in Y 2016, 5th-most-watched primetime network.
CNN also had a boon in ratings; in primetime, the cable news network placed 8th with an average of 1.3-M viewers, its highest ranking since Y 1995.
MSNBC finished behind both CNN and Fox, but still had a growth spurt, Y 2016 was its most-watched year.
“Trump deserves all the credit for this banner year in cable news. Period,” a media columnist at the W-P said Thursday. “Any cable news executive who insists otherwise risks eternal embarrassment.”
Donald Trump took frequent aim at the “dishonest” media, but as NY-T’s media columnist Jim Rutenberg wrote, “As Mr. Trump tries to burn the media village down, he may just be saving it.”
