Daytona Speedway Became Ferrari World This Weekend
Hundreds of workers transformed the infield of Daytona International Speedway into “Ferrari International Speedway” for this weekend’s Finali Mondiali (World Cup Final in Italian).
Ferrari Challenge race cars from Asia, Europe and North America converged on the Speedway for 4 days of activity, capped by Sunday’s Formula One Show and Ferrari Challenge World Final.
“Ferrari has put up a dozen different structures around the Speedway as well as making use of some of our permanent facilities we have in place,” said the VP of Speedway operations. “This has been 2 years in the making.”
The Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) gathering was an infield-only event Thursday through Saturday. The Speedway will open the stadium to spectators Sunday.
The Finali Mondiali brings all of Ferrari’s worlds into one location at the same time.
In addition to Challenge finals for all 3 series, the event features historic race cars, F1 models new and old, plus every imaginable road car ever made by the car company.
Ferrari is a Tier 1 global brand, and they take great care of their clienti.
The racing part of the weekend program is sanctioned by IMSA, which has the marquee WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the sports cars which compete in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.
The North America Ferrari Challenge has been part of the Rolex 24 week for 6 years, so the drivers are expected to have a slight advantage over their Asian and European counterparts.
Mark Raffauf is IMSA director said Tuesday afternoon he was in the Daytona garage directing traffic as teams from around the globe
Mr. Raffauf thinks a Key reason Ferrari selected Daytona for the Finali Mondiali is because of the relationship forged by Enzo Ferrari and Bill France Sr. in the late 1950’s and early ‘60’s. Mr. France was co-founder of NASCAR in Y 1948 and opened the Speedway in Y 1959.
Ferrari race cars dominated the early years of the Rolex 24 and sparked Ford (NYSE:F) to build a car that could compete in the GT ranks.
“I think the legacy and relationship between Ferrari and the France family had a lot to do with this,” Mr. Raffauf said.
The Scuderia’s F1 team ran practice laps here during the Summer for tire testing. A group of older model F1 racers will do “gentlemen races” over the Speedway’s 3.56-mile road course this weekend.
