The preparations for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este are well advanced, and the motto for this year’s event on the shores of Lake Como is “Hollywood on the Lake”.
Let’s have a fascinating look at the past.
Many winning automobiles from years gone by were eminently equipped for film stardom.
Take the Maserati 450S for example that played a leading role in a “Whodunnit” winning “Best of Show” at the Trofeo BMW Group in 2014. This was a vehicle that once played an important role in a criminal case. In 1956, the factory delivered the car to a certain Tony Parravano in California but he soon disappeared from sight in Mexico. The American tax authorities requisitioned his Maserati and auctioned the car in 1959 for $3000.
The history of the victor in 2015 is another unusual story. The American collector David Sydorick from Beverly Hills entered with an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 from 1932. However, the Italian sports car penned by Zagato was in fact a “car on loan” at the time since Sydorik had already sold it. The condition of the sale was that he would be allowed to enter the automobile for the Concorso on Lake Como before handing it over.
In 2016, the most prestigious award went to an “adopted” rare treasure, 1 of 4 Maserati A6 GCS automobiles ever built.
Originally Aldo Brovarone had designed the coupé for Cisitalia in 1952. But the company went bankrupt and the designer applied to Battista “Pinin” Farina with his design. Shortly afterwards, Farina used the body for a Maserati and presented the vehicle at the Paris Motor Show in 1954.
Last year, an automobile from Italian production won the competition on Lake Como for the 4th year in succession in the form of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SS Prototipo.
The winning vehicle for the year 2017 triumphed exactly 60 years after it was produced. In 1957, Franco Scaglione was the Chief Stylist at Italian coachwork supremo Bertone and he developed the coupé. The prototype with the streamlined lightweight alloy body remained a unique special.
