In another victory, Quentin Tarantino’s original Summer epic may be set to be the the director best grosser ever.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has passed the $200-M mark at the global box office, a feat accomplished by only 1 other original film this year.
Through Thursday, Quentin Tarantino’s 9th film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt stood at $208.5-M worldwide, Sunday, that number should approach $250-M.
That’s not the only milestone Mr. Tarantino and Sony (NYSE:SNE) are celebrating. The film is set to pass all of his other outings.
Further, Once Upon a Time is one of the most successful films of all time about Hollywood behind La La Land and Argo.
In an era when franchises and branded IP dominate, Universal’s is the only other original movie this year to have earned $200-M or more at the global box office.
Analysts predict that Once Upon a Time will ultimately earn between $375 million and $400-M globally, ahead of Inglourious Basterds at $316.9-M.
The Big Q: Can Mr. Tarantino’s ode to old Hollywood can catch Django Unchained, which earned a career-best $425.4-M following its December 2012 release.
The Big A: Yes, Likely
Once Upon a Time began rolling out overseas last weekend, so it has plenty of ticket buying movie goers ahead terms of its international run.
Major markets yet to open include Japan (30 August), Italy (18 September) and SKorea (26 September).
There is no word yet on a China release date. China’s Bona Film Group co-financed the pic and is handling distribution duties in such Asian markets as Hong Kong.
Elsewhere, ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ is approaching $600-M globally after zooming to $102-M in its China debut.
