Box Office: ‘Moana’ #1 for 2nd Weekend With $28.4-M

Fox Searchlight (NASDAQ:FOX) opened Jackie in five theaters to $275,000 for a per-screen average of $55,000. The film, starring Natalie Portman and is gathering awards buzz, was bought by Searchlight at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ took in $18.5-M in its 3rd frame, ‘Incarnate’ saw a light $2.6-M opening.

Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Moana topped the North American box office for its 2nd week running, with $28.4-M.

The Disney animated film fell just 50% from its opening frame, better than Disney’s record-breaking animated hit, Frozen, which dropped 53% in its 2nd week after Thanksgiving in Y 2013.

Moana has earned $119.9-M domestically and $177.4-M world wide, debuting  in 5 new markets .

Warner Bros.’, a unit of Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earned $18.5-M to place at # 2 with a domestic take of $183.5-M, dropping 59% in its 3rd frame.

Fantastic Beasts was the # 1 film internationally for the 3rd week running, earning $60.4-M in an estimated 67 foreign markets and bringing its take to $424.4. It has earned over $600-M at the worldwide box office so far.

Paramount’s, a unit of Viacom (NASDAQ:VIA), sci-fi film Arrival. In its 4th week, took in $7.3-M, to edge out Paramount’s Allied for the #. 3 spot. Arrival has earned $73-M at the North American box office so far.

Allied, starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, took in $7.1-M in its 2nd week, and for a domestic take of $28.9-M to date, international box office is at $24.8-M.

The Disney-Marvel film Doctor Strange took in $6.5-M for a domestic take of $215.3-M, Doctor Strange has grossed $634.9-M globally to surpass Y 2010’s Iron Man 2 ($624-M).

The weekend’s only new wide release, Incarnate, opened to an estimated $2.6-M for the weekend from 1,737 locations, a soft start for the $5-M horror movie.
