Box Office: ‘Fate of the Furious’ hits $908-M


DOA’s: ‘Unforgettable’ opening to $4.8-M, and ‘The Promise’ debuts to just $4.1-M after costing $100-M to make.

Universal’s, a unit of Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) The Fate of the Furious beat at the North American box office, grossing $38.7-M in its 2nd frame for a 10-day domestic box office total of $163.6-M and $908.4-M globally.

Fate of the Furious is doing huge business overseas, where it earned another $163.4-M for a foreign total of $744.8-M, led by China with $318-M.

 The Boss Baby placed # 3 with $12.-M for a domestic take of $137-M and $358.1-M worldwide, followed by Beauty and the Beast with $10-M for a global box office total of $1.1-B.

Disney’s NYSE:DIS) nature documentary Born in China, earned $5.1-M from 1,508 theaters to place # 4.

Warner Bros.’ female-centric thriller Unforgettable, starring Katherine Heigl, debuted to a mere $4.8-M from 2,417 locations, marking a career worst for Ms. Heigl for a nationwide opening. Unforgettable placed # 7, stars, the film happily cost just $12-M to make.

The Promise, a big-budget movie bowed to $4.1-M from 2,251 theaters after costing $100-M to produce.

The 2 other new films, action-comedy Free Fire and sci-fi thriller Phoenix Forgotten also disappointed.

 Phoenix Forgotten, coming in at # 11 with $2-M from 1,592 cinemas, tells the story of three teenagers who disappear after trying to solve the mystery behind the 1997 UFO phenomenon knows as the Phoenix Lights.

Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, a send-up of vintage action movies, grossed $1-M from 1,070 theaters for indie distributor A24. The film  placed #18.

Fox Searchlight’s Gifted crossed $10-M after earning another $4.5-M from 1,986 theaters.

James Grey’s The Lost City of Z expanded into a total of 614 theaters in its 2nd weekend, earning $2.1-M to place #10.
