Box Office: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Takes a $50-M Bow,’Nutcracker’ DOA

Tyler Perry’s R-rated comedy ‘Nobody’s Fool,’ opens in 3rd spot.
Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is a box-office champion, rose to a $50-M launch in North America, the 2nd-biggest start of all time for a music biopic when adjusted for inflation.
Overseas, the pic opened to $72.5-M for a weekend take of $122.5-M and an early box office total of $141.7-M.
New Regency co-financed the $52-M biopic, with Graham King producing. Bohemian Rhapsody is its Fox’s (NASDAQ:FOX) biggest domestic opening outside of Deadpool 2 in more than a year.
Disney (NYSE:DIS) saw a DOA miss at the weekend as the big-budget The Nutcracker and the Four Realms bombed with $20-M in the US after costing $125-M to produce.
Nutcracker placed # 2, followed by Tyler Perry’s Nobody’s Fool, the R-rated comedy turned in $14-M one of the lowest openings of Mr. Perry’s career.
Nutcracker fared better overseas, earning $38.5-M from its first 45 markets for a global oven of $58.5-M.
Holdover A Star Is Born, from Warner Bros., followed in fourth place with $11.1-M for a worldwide box office total approaching $300-M.
Universal and Blumhouse’s Halloween rounded out the Top 5 with $11-M in its 3rd weekend for a domestic total of $150.4-M through Sunday. Internationally, it grossed $18.3-M for a foreign take of $79.2-M and a global box office of $229.6-M.
Venom finished Sunday with a worldwide box office at than $541-M+.
At the specialty box office
Focus Features’ awards contender Boy Erased posted the best screen average of the weekend at $44,000 by taking in $220,000 in its debut on 5 screens.
A Private War opened in four theaters for an estimated screen average of $17,000-$18,000.
Sony Pictures Classics launched the documentary Maria by Callas, about famed opera diva Maria Callas, in 4 US cinemas, reporting a screen average at $12,723.
Bodied, a rap contest comedy produced by Eminem released by Neon, reported a screen average of $3,609 on 14 screens. The pic is a multi-platform release with a YouTube window.
