Australia: S&P/ASX 200 (.AXJO) falls on financials
The Australian sharemarket posted a modest decline on Tuesday despite an overnight advance in base metals prices helping lift the shares of heavyweight miners.
The S&P/ASX 200 index fell 27.9 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 6258.1, falling on losses made by the big financial stocks.
Macquarie announced late on Monday that it would lift its variable mortgage rates, putting pressure on the big four banks. Macquarie’s shares fell 0.9 per cent to $122.52 during the session.
The major banks also fell, with Commonwealth bank wiping 11 points from the index alone as its shares fell 2.2 per cent to $74.73. ANZ fell 1 per cent to $28.80, Westpac slid 1 per cent to $29.49 and NAB closed at $27.86, down 0.6 per cent.
Overall, the bias in prices is: Upwards.
