This yr’s CinemaCon comes at a critical juncture for the beleaguered box office. All 5 major Hollywood studios will show up in Las Vegas, beginning 25th April 25 to champion their Y 2022 slates to theater owners, while still trying to emerge from the VirusCasedemic and battling changing consumer habits.

Expect teasers and footage for *Avatar 2*, *Jurassic World Dominion*, *Black Adam*, *The Flash* and much more.

Family highlights will include *Toy Story* spinoff *Lightyear* and *Minions: The Rise of Gru*. 

Other Y 2022 titles sure to be mentioned are the next installments in the *Doctor Strange*,* Black Panther *and* Thor* franchises, while Paramount is treating exhibitors to a full screening of Tom Cruise’s *Top Gun: Maverick*.

Warner Bros.’ Wizarding World is in trouble on the movie side.

*Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore* opened to just $43-M at the domestic box office over Easter weekend. It is faring better overseas, where it earned another $71-M for a global tally of $193-M

The $200-M movie is landing well behind its predecessors. As franchises become ever more important to Hollywood studios, it remains to be seen whether this particular series can keep going.

 Sony’s religious-themed *Father Stu*, which tells the true story of a former boxer and two-bit actor who becomes a priest. Mark Wahlberg, Mel Gibson and Jacki Weaver star. Wahlberg is also one of the film’s producers and put up some of the financing.

*Father Stu* opened midweek in order to take advantage of kids being out of school for spring break. Sony is projecting a 5 day debut of $8-M

Audiences that turned out for *Father Stu* certainly liked it, giving it an A CinemaScore and stellar exit polls. The movie did best among blue-collar crowds, and also generated big interest in Helena, Montana, where Father Stu is from.

For the weekend itself, *Father Stu* placed #5.

Romantic action-adventure *The Lost City* from Paramount held with $6.5-M for a domestic total of $78.6-M and $99-M globally.

Indie breakout *Everything Everywhere All At Once*, from A24, moved up to No. 4 as it expanded into a total of 2,200 locations. The film grossed $6.2-M for a domestic tally of $17.7-M.
