FLASH: Gold Steady, USD Up, Crude Oil Down, Stocks Down

Notes: Investors bet most Asian currencies will come under further pressure, a Reuters poll showed, with trade tensions between the United States and China firmly dominating headlines once again.

US Crude Oil inventories rose last week, hitting their highest marks since July 2017, due to weak refinery demand, the Energy Information Administration said Wednesday.

In Asia

Gold: Gold prices were steady Thursday, while bullion investors looked for a direction after the FOMC mins indicated that rates will remain steady.

  • Spot gold was steady at $1,273.15 oz as of 0517 GMT,
  • US Gold futures -0.1% to $1,272.60 oz.

The short-term effect of the US-China trade conflict is driving .DXY higher in general and that does not help gold.

Energy: Crude Oil prices fell Thursday, extending falls from the prior session on surging US Crude Oil inventories and weak demand from refineries.

  • Brent Crude Oil futures were at 70.62 bbl at 0109 GMT, -37c, or 0.5%, from Wednesday’s close,
  • NYMEX WTI Crude Oil futures were -31c, or 0.5%, at $61.11 bbl.

Commercial US Crude Oil inventories rose by 4.7-M bbls in the week ended 17 May to 476.8-M, their highest since July 2017, the EIA data showed.

Equities: Overall, Asian shares were in the Red Thursday on concerns over US-China trade issues.

Currencies: .DXY Vs a basket of 6 peer currencies edged up 0.1% to hang near its 1-month highs marked early in the week.

Commodities (quotes): Energy, Metals, and Agriculture Grains.
