Asia 2019: Gold, USD, Crude Oil, Stocks & Commodities

Gold:  Gold prices scaled a more than 6-month highs Thursday as worries about a global economic slowdown and volatility in equities boosted safe-haven buying, while a weaker USD offered support.

  • Spot gold touched its highest mark since 15 June at $1,290.09, and was trading up 0.3% at $1,288.43 oz at 0443 GMT.
  • US gold futures were up about 0.5% at $1,290.20 oz.

The weaker USD lent some support for gold. People are more interested in gold as the stock markets are under pressure and are looking at gold as a safe haven.

Energy: Crude Oil prices fell by 1 to 2% Thursday on volatile currency and stock markets, and on concerns that an economic slowdown in Y 2019 will cut into fuel demand just as supplies are building.

  • NYMEX WTI Crude Oil futures dropped by 2.2$, or $1.01, from their last settlement to $45.53 by 0550 GMT.
  • ICE Brent Crude Oil futures were down 1.4%, or 76x, at $54.15 bbl.

In physical Crude Oil markets, Top exporter Saudi Arabia is expected to cut February prices for heavier grades sold to Asia by up to 50c bbl due to weaker fuel oil margins, respondents to a Reuters survey said Thursday.

Equities: Asian markets recouped losses Thursday, while US stock futures declined after a rare revenue warning from index heavy-weight Apple Inc added to worries about slowing global growth.

Currencies: .DXY fell as much as 0.3%. The Japanese Yen, also seen as a preferred asset during times of economic volatility, surged Vs USD Thursday.
