Most Southeast Asian stock markets tracked Wall Street and Asian equities higher Tuesday, with Thailand rising the most, although gains were capped following a spike in infections due to the coronavirus in the region.
Australian shares rose Tuesday as reports of slowing fatalities from the coronavirus outbreak raised optimism that the fight against the disease was reaching an inflection point.
The S&P/ASX 200 index gained as much as 2.6% to 5,423.10, its highest in more than 3 wks, and was up 1.6% by 0125 GMT.
New Zealand’s benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index advanced as much as 2.8% to 10,040.98, its highest in nearly a month.
New Zealand, under lockdown since 25 March has recorded just over 1,100 confirmed cases, with 1 death linked to the virus.
As the number of daily deaths in New York steadied and fatalities slowed across western Europe, all 3 US major indexes closed 7%+ Monday, lifting Asian equities to their second straight day of gains Tuesday.
The Thai index rose as much as 4.4%, with energy stocks leading gains. PTT Pcl and PTT Exploration and Production Pcl rose as much as 8.5% and 7.9%, respectively.
Singaporean shares jumped 2.7%, with United Overseas Bank Ltd gaining 3% and DBS Group Holdings Ltd 2.7%.
In the Philippines, shares advanced for a 3rd session running and hit a 4-wk high. The benchmark index was boosted by gains in big-cap conglomerates SM Investments and Ayala Land. President Rodrigo Duterte approved the extension of a lockdown and home quarantine measures covering more than half of the population.
The Indonesian benchmark fell, with financials dragging the most. PT Bank Central Asia Tbk shed up to 1.9%. The Indonesian health ministry approved a request by the government of Jakarta to impose large-scale social restrictions in the city.
