Australian shares ended lower Thursday, after the country’s unemployment rate hit a 22-yr high and rising C-19 coronavirus cases in some states raised a likelihood of harsher curbs, reminding investors of the impending economic pain.

The S&P/ASX 200 index fell 0.7% to 6010.90 at the close of trade. In New Zealand, the S&P/NZX 50 index fell 0.9% to 11,505.06.

Japanese shares slipped Thursday as investors booked profit after sharp gains in the prior session.

The benchmark Nikkei shares average fell 0.49% to 22,831.96 by the midday break, retreating from a 5 wk high hit in the prior session. The broader Topix fell 0.27% to 1,585.27

Chinese shares fell by the most in more than 5 months Thursday as a Bull run that drove the country’s benchmark indexes to multi-year highs reversed sharply amid renewed US-China tensions.

At the close, the Shanghai Composite index was down 4.5% to 3,210.10, and the blue-chip CSI300 index dove 4.81%, the sharpest 1-day percentage fall for both indexes since 2 February.
