The C-19 Lockdown has made the Average American Fatter!

A new polls revealed that the average American has put on about 5 lbs during the C-19 coronavirus lockdown. The major contributing factors include increased alcohol consumption, eating processed carbohydrates like baked goods and pasta, and lack of exercise.

The survey, conducted by OnePoll for supplement company Naked Nutrition, included over 2,000 Americans who were asked about their diet and exercise habits.

The COVID-19 has been a stressful time for many, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle can support a person’s overall health and should remain a priority,” said Lauren Manaker, a registered dietitian and nutritionist. “This data highlights the importance of finding simple solutions for people to maintain a healthy lifestyle while in isolation.”

Here are some tips from on how to avoid weight gain and stay fit when you’re stuck inside the house:

Decide what you are going to eat every day. Create a regular schedule and avoid mindless grazing or snacking, says Vicki Shanta Retelny RDN, author of “Total Body Diet for Dummies.” Planning a daily menu can help, with emphasis on whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and lean meat or fish.

Stay busy to avoid eating out of boredom. Take long, socially distanced walks outdoors, start or return to a hobby that you enjoy, or create greeting cards to send to loved ones. Learn to distinguish the difference between eating when you are hungry and eating when you are bored.

Stay active. Even if your gym is closed, 65% of the people surveyed in the poll said they found ways to work out at home. There are countless workout videos on YouTube and other video platforms. Set aside a specific time every day to exercise. Include aerobic activity daily such as running up and down the stairs or doing jumping jacks during a commercial break.

Prioritize sleep to keep your hunger hormones in check. “Poor sleep habits can have a negative impact on food habits,” says Susan E. Wilson RDN, president of the Kentucky Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, according to Everyday Health. “Lack of sleep disrupts hormones that control feelings of hunger and satiety, and reduce motivation for physical activity.” The expert suggests using a sleep tracking app such as Sleep Cycle to help establish consistency in sleep and wake times.
