President Trump May Meet Iran’s Rouhani at UN With “No Preconditions”

Tuesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that President Trump may meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at the upcoming United Nations meeting, with “no preconditions.”

Secretary Pompeo made the comments at a press briefing to unveil new sanctions on groups including Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

An official familiar with the disagreements between President Trump and former NSA John Bolton said the adviser’s opposition to a possible meeting between President Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was a precipitating factor in the dismissal. French President Emmanuel Macron has been trying to broker such a meeting, possibly on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly, in the hope of salvaging the international Iran nuclear deal that President Trump withdrew the US from.

Mr. Bolton was also opposed to President Trump’s now-scrapped plan to bring Taliban negotiators to Camp David last weekend to try to finalize a peace deal in Afghanistan.
