Paul Ryan, “Donald Trump and I share common ground on a lot of things”
Thursday, US House Speaker Paul Ryan said that he will not withdraw his endorsement of Donald Trump for President despite differences between the two.
“That’s not my plan,” Speaker Ryan told reporters at the Capitol. “I don’t have a plan to do that.”
Speaker Ryan said he and Donald Trump share “common ground on a lot of things,” and “I do believe the last thing we want is a Democrat in the White House, like Hillary Clinton.”
He 1st pledged to support of Donald Trump 2 weeks ago, but since then the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has said some things that Ryan has disagreed with, such as his proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the US. That difference seems to have softened since the Orlando terrorist massacre.
Mr. Ryan also spoke about gun control, which has been in the news this week in the wake of the terror attack in Orlando that killed 49 people.
Donald Trump also called for stricter gun laws that would prevent people on terror watch lists from legally purchasing a firearm.
“We don’t want to take away citizens’ rights without due process,” Speaker Ryan said. “We want to get this right so we don’t undermine terrorist investigations.”
On the potential voter front
Despite assertions to the contrary from political, celebrity, and media detractors, Donald Trump’s massive 9.1-M Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) followers are made up of real people who like the GOP presumptive Presidential nominee, and are likely to show up at the polls in November.
The data from the database marketing agency Stirista indicates that 70% of Trump’s Twitter followers appear to be his supporters and about 11% are expected to be 1st-time voters.
“It’s translating into votes,” Stirista CEO Ajay Gupta says. “Not at a 1-to-1 level. But at a 70% level, it is a pretty good margin.”
Donald Trump’s ability to use social media to his advantage is “some of the best in the party,” a top GOP tech strategist says. “As many people as it’s pissing off, it’s turning people on.”
