Friday’s World Markets Outlook: Asia-Pacific

Australian shares fell 5% Friday, their most in 5 wks, as risk sentiment was battered by threats of new tariffs from US President Trump Vs China.

President Trump made clear his concerns about China’s role in the origin and spread of the coronavirus were taking priority over efforts to build on an initial trade agreement.

Fresh US tariffs could delay a return to normalcy from the virus-driven downturn for China, Australia’s biggest trading partner, and thereby, hurt Australia too.

The S&P/ASX 200 index settled at 5,245.9, posting its 5th weekly gainer in 6.

Japanese shares retreated from a 8 wk high Friday, led by declines in chipmaking firms and as investors chose to re-shuffle the deck following a streak of earnings reports.

The benchmark Nikkei average fell 2.8% to 19,619.35 pts, erasing Thursday’s 2.6% gainer, with overnight Wall Street losses and weaker US stock futures weighing. E-Mini futures for the S&P 500 last traded down 1.6%.

The Nikkei, however, was up 1.9% on the week. The index climbed 6.7% in April, marking it best month since October 2017.

Asian stocks have recovered sharply in April and are on track to post their biggest monthly gain since October 2015, thanks to the stimulus measures unveiled by governments to cushion their economies against the coronavirus-induced slowdown.

The MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares gained about 8.5% this month, compared with a jump of about 11.6% in the MSCI’s global share index.

Vietnamese, Thai and Indian stocks all surged about 15% or higher this month and led regional gainers.
