F1: Ferrari’s (NYSE:RACE) Vettel Cautious Over Pace, Quick Times Aside
Sebastian Vettel is cautious at Barsalona despite Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) consistently featuring near the top of the times in testing so far.
“Time will tell,” said Mr. Vettel after lapping within a 0.25 sec of MercedesAMG’ pace-setting time Wednesday.
“I don’t have a crystal ball. I have two other balls but they don’t tell me much.”
“At this time we have a lot of stuff on our list, it’s a very long list. We have a lot of things to do and for sure the potential is higher because the rules are very different but it is for everyone.”
Mr. Vettel that he expects Ferrari and their rivals will bring a lot of updates before the 1st race.
“I’m quite curious to see for now until Melbourne how the car will change and how everybody else will change,” he said. “At least in Melbourne we have a little bit more clue of where we are, right now it’s difficult to say.”
The Ferrari driver said he enjoyed the feel from F1’s new tires and increased down force. “I had a feel of [the tyres] last year with the tyre testing, helping to develop,” he said.
“It was already a step forward on the mechanical side, obviously the tires are quite a bit wider and more draggy so slower down the straights. But faster in the corners which is always more enjoyable for us. If the straight is a bit longer, doesn’t really matter.”
Two of the Circuit de Catalunya’s quickest corners can now be taken without lifting but Mr. Vettel pointed out “it’s not 1st time” for him. “I have been flat in turn 3 and also turn 9 in 2010. It’s probably similar to that.”
“It’s obviously nice when you can push the car harder and also for longer. They tires seem to be more consistent. That’s obviously a better, nicer sensation when you drive the car.”
Kimi Raikkonen edged Lewis Hamilton for the fastest time in preseason testing Tuesday, a sign that Formula One could be regaining its competitive edge.
Mr. Raikkonen pushed his Ferrari through a flying lap of 1 min, 20.960 secs on Day 2 of tests at the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya. While the Finn bbeat Hamilton’s earlier effort by 0.023 secs, he did so using a slower type of tire made for greater durability over outright speed.
His good performance came after Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel mustered the 2nd-fastest time to Mr. Hamilton Monday.
Lap times continue to drop as teams tweak cars that have been built since a profound rulebook overhaul by F1 to increase groundforce and grip, and thus boost speed.
Mr. Raikkonen’s lap was almost 2 secs faster than his own preseason-leading effort from last year’s 8 days of testing on the same track.
