DOJ, Mueller and Rosenstein Under ‘Siege’
Wednesday, Paul Manafort, the former Trump Campaign Chairman, filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice (DOJO, special counsel Robert Mueller, and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday.
The lawsuit alleges that Mr. Mueller’s Russia investigation has extended its scope. He also charges the DOJ broke the law by bringing Mr. Mueller, a former FBI director, on board to spearhead the probe looking at whether The Trump Campaign colluded with Russia.
Mr. Manafort was indicted by The Mueller’s Team in October on money laundering and tax charges, along with his business associate Rick Gates.
The lawsuit charges that Mr. Rosenstein’s directive to appoint Mr. Mueller “exceeds the scope of Mr. Rosenstein’s authority to appoint special counsel as well as specific restrictions on the scope of such appointments.”
An 27 October federal indictment accuses Mr. Manafort and a long-time associate, Rick Gates, of failing to register as agents in the US for political consulting they performed for Ukraine and for pro-Russian politicians there.
Both men also are accused of conspiring to launder money.
Prosecutors charge that Mr. Manafort laundered money from overseas to buy houses, cars, clothes, antiques and landscaping services. He also is accused of hiding offshore accounts.
Both Messers Manafort and Gates have pleaded not guilty to all charges and are out on bail pending the resolution.
