Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2017

Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2017

From the early years of car-making to the concepts of tomorrow.

BMW Group Classic and the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este present the world’s most exclusive and tradition-rich beauty contest for historic cars and motorcycles on 26 – 28 May 2017

The motto for the 2017 event is “Around the World in 80 Days – Voyage through an Era of Records”

Our Jury expands to 12 expert members.

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2017 will get underway in 154 days in the Italian town of Cernobbio on the banks of Lake Como.

Co-hosted by BMW Group Classic and the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este, the event ranks as the world’s most exclusive and tradition-rich beauty contest for historic cars and motorcycles.

The list of vehicles already vying for a place on the exclusive Concorso shortlist has a decidedly global and record-breaking feel about it.

The 8 competition categories for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2017 will cover every era of automotive history – from the early pioneering days of motorized transportation to the 1970’s and 1980’s, when the thrill of speed and a taste for extravagance held sway.

With this in mind, the Selecting Committee is inviting further submissions during the selection phase now underway both for the 5 classes of competition already determined and the three categories that will be added to the program at the start of 2017.

Only then will the decision be taken on which Top-Class vehicles will be presented by their owners at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2017 to seek the favor of the expert jury and compete for the public vote.

An important change for the 2017 edition of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este concerns the international jury of experts who will rule on the winners and runners-up in the various classes of competition for historic cars and motorcycles. Instead of the previous line-up of nine established experts, 12 jurors plus the jury president will now gather to examine and assess the rarities on four wheels.

President Lorenzo Ramaciotti explains why the new members have been added to the panel: “We are keen to have even more time to spend on each individual candidate. The four groups of experts will each oversee two of the total of eight vehicle classes.”

Around 50 rarely-encountered automotive gems will line up in the grounds of the Villa d’Este at Lake Como once again in 2017 to put their history, original condition and singularity under the spotlight. In addition, the jurors will examine the vehicle documents and restoration paperwork, plus photographs of the original specimen  and, of course, invite the owners to recount the fascinating lives of their vaunted treasures. The increase in their number allows the panel of experts greater scope to focus on technical fineries, more freedom to explore the historical significance of each model and ample opportunity to talk shop with the proud owners.

As part of the preparations for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2017, the Selecting Committee has set out the following 5 classes of competition:

Class A. Speed Demons: Endurance Pioneers of the Golden Age: This category encourages a meeting of extremes. For example, electric cars from the late 19th century will share the stage with the “fire-spitting” visuals and imposing soundtracks of 1920s machines such as the Mercedes Simplex, American Underslung – with its 40-in wheels – and racers from the Bentley and Bugatti stables. This class of competition will therefore recall the Gordon Bennett Cup endurance races of years gone by, the time when the classic Paris–Rouen was an automotive affair and the early grand-prix and 24-hour occasions at Le Mans.

Class B. Travelling in Style: Around the World in 40 Years: Luxurious and opulent models from the pre-war era do battle for the jurors’ votes in this category, ex-Maharaja cars likely providing the most fertile hunting ground for the Selecting Committee. Star turns from marques such as Duesenberg, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, Isotta and Hispano-Suiza will hog the attention here, preferably with specially manufactured or even 1-off bodies. In keeping with the period, these candidates should major in decadence, even if that is not the only string to their bow

Class C. Faster, Quieter, Smoother: Heroes of the Jet Age: This class brings together racing beauties from the years after 1945. The sporting spirit of the early post-war period is represented most vividly by classic racers from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and Aston Martin. Leading the way by a distance in the exclusivity stakes are sporting machines boasting not only powerful engines, but also bespoke or 1-off bodies.

Class D. The Grand Tour Continues: The Next 40 Years: The candidates in this class of competition will make the hearts of aficionados beat more than a little faster. It wasn’t long after 1945 that large luxury cars began to return to the roads. Those of means could enjoy the sumptuous surrounding on board models like the Mercedes 600 and Rolls-Royce Phantom or creations draped in even more extravagant bodywork, from Facel-Vega, among others. Over the years in question, the luxury class also produced its fair share of bespoke and one-off cars demanding particular attention.

Class E. Racers on the Road: Playboys Toys: These cars were the playthings of high society; what they lacked in practicality they more than made up for in sublime beauty. Several racing cars at the time were also approved for road use. A case in point was the Porsche 935 K3 Le Mans commissioned by ex-Formula One team boss Walter Wolf in 1979. Likewise the Porsche 917, only three examples of which were built. The first of these was delivered to Count Rossi. The TÜV inspection authorities in Germany refused the 917 road-going approval, but it was given the green light in the USA – on the understanding, rumour had it, that the Porsche would never actually be driven on a public highway. This category of competition may also reveal a Le Mans Ferrari, of the type a dashing chap-about-town would once have steered from nightspot to nightspot.

Registration is still open

Submissions of high-calibre classics from every era of automotive history can be made up to the moment when the final place in the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2017 is granted. Your historic model may not fit into any of the five classes featured in the program so far, of course, but we would still encourage you to enter it in the competition. The remaining three categories will be finalized and announced at the beginning of 2017.

Owners of historic rarities on two wheels and four can register them for the event at The international Selecting Committee will then run the rule over each of the applications submitted, before making their final decision on which will go forward to the competition.

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este team is looking forward to meeting up once again on the banks of Lake Como with all those entered in and passionate about this unique and historic event. Until then, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
