Box Office: ‘Toy Story 4’ Takes $58-M

Pixar (Private) and Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Toy Story 4 helds # 1 in its 2nd weekend and fended off new offerings Annabelle Comes Home and Yesterday.

The animated family film dipped just 52% to $58-M passing the $200-M mark in NA, and cleared $496.5-M worldwide.

New Line’s Summer horror pic Annabelle Comes Home came in 2nd with estimated weekend earnings of $20.4-M for a 5-day haul of $31.2-M, in line with expectations. Internationally, it opened to $45-M from 63 markets for a worldwide total of $76.2-M box office so far.

Universal and Working Title’s Yesterday followed in 3rd place with $17-M. The movie’s better-than-expected opening is a win for original adult titles following the disappointing performances of Late Night and Booksmart.

Yesterday, director Danny Boyle his biggest opening ever tells the story of a young man who wakes up in a Beatles-free world and gets to pretend he wrote their songs.

Yesterday took in $7.7-M overseas from its 1st 30 markets for an early global box office of $24.7-M.

Elsewhere

Sony’s NYSE:SNE) Spider-Man: Far From Home conquered China, Japan and Hong Kong, where it opened ahead of its domestic debut on 2 July.

The superhero pic, a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, grossed $111-M from the 3 markets, led by China with $98-M, the 4th-best showing for a Hollywood superhero pic behind Avengers: EndgameAvengers: Infinity War and Venom and the seventh-biggest of all time for a studio movie. And Far From Home clocked in 46% ahead of Homecoming.

In Japan, it earned $9.4-M in Japan, the second biggest launch for a superhero film behind Avengers: Endgame, and a stellar $3.8-M in Hong Kong.

Disney’s Aladdin is still high up on the chart, as it cleared $300-M domestically and neared $900-M globally. It finished Sunday with a global take of $874.2-M, including $305.9 million from North America.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum crossed the $300-M mark worldwide. Its current global total stands at $303.6-M.
