Box Office: ‘Toy Story 4’ is #1 with Franchise High $238-M Worldwide

‘Child’s Play’ scared up $14-M, while ‘Anna’ came DOA with $3.5-M in a career-worst for French filmmaker Luc Besson.

Pixar (private) and Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) critically acclaimed Toy Story 4 went to the Top of the NA box office chart at the weekend with $118-M, 1 of the biggest openings of all time for an animated movie.

The family tentpole bowed simultaneously in several foreign markets for an international launch of $120-M and $238-M haul globally, a record for the genre.

The family film garnered an A CinemaScore from audiences.

Placing #2 United Artists’ Child’s Play, a remake of the Y 1988 film about a menacing doll named Chucky. The R-rated horror pic opened to $14-M from 3,007 locations to come in on the low end of expectations.

The film received a C+ CinemaScore from moviegoers.

 Anna, the weekend’s 3rd new nationwide offering, were grim. From French director Luc Besson and released in the US by Lionsgate/Summit, the crime thriller took in $3.5-M from 2,114 cinemas in a career-worst bow for Director Besson.

Anna received a B+ CinemaScore.

Among the holdovers

Disney’s Aladdin stayed high up on the chart in its 5th weekend, coming in at #3 with $12.2-M for a domestic take of $287.5-M and $810.1-M globally.

Sony’s Men in Black: International fell 64% in its 2nd frame to came #4 with $10.8-M, so far it has taken in $182.1-M globally.

Illumination and Universal’s Secret Life of Pets rounded out the Top 5 with $10.8-M in its 3rd weekend for a domestic take of $129.4-M and $194.2-M worldwide.

Paramount’s Rocketman grew its global total to $153.4-M globally, including $177.3-M from the North America box office.

Amazon Studios’ (NASDAQ:AMZN) dramedy Late Night continued to struggle, falling 49% in its 2nd weekend of nationwide play to $2.6-M. The film’s domestic box office total stands at $10.7-M.
