Box Office: ‘Pirates 5’ Nabs $77-M in US, ‘Baywatch’ Drowns with $23-M


Memorial Day revenue at the North American box office posted to its lowest marks in almost 20 years. Overseas, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ from Disney (NYSE:DIS) posted a $208.4-M debut.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales won this holiday frame with a 4-day nab of $77-M from 4,276 theaters. Overseas, it hauled in $208.4-M more treasure.

Baywatch, Paramount’s R-rated adaptation of the classic TV show drowned with a -day gross of $23-M. Baywatch even lost out to Disney/Marvel holdover Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which took in $25.1-M over the holiday weekend to place # 2.

Memorial Day weekend revenue at the domestic box office fell to its lowest level in 18 years, or $176-M, according to preliminary estimates from comScore.

The reviews hurt Baywatch, which scored great in test screenings. Baywatch opens in earnest overseas next week.

Fox and Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant fell to # 4 in its 2nd frame with an estimated 4-day gross of $13.1-M for a domestic take of $60-M. The sc-fi horror pic has earned $101-M internationally for a global box office of $161-M.

The Fate of the Furious became only the 6th movie in history to cross $1-B at the international box office, fueled by a record-breaking $387.4-M in China. Globally, the Universal, a unit of Comcast (CMCSA) release has earned $1.22-B.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast crossed $500-M domestically, becoming only the 8 film to do so, not accounting for inflation.

Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman is opening later this week.

Other June tent-poles to follow on include: The Mummy, Cars 3 and Transformers: The Last Knight.
