The Lion King and Once Upon a Time was a super combo for North America. The Y-Y deficit at the domestic box office through Sunday was reduced to 6.5%, according to Comscore, 2 weeks ago, it was -9%.
Once Upon a Time teamed movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt for the 1st time on the big screen to mark the best weekend opening of Director Tarantino’s career receiving glowing reviews and a B CinemaScore from audiences.
Once Upon a Time cost $90-M to produce making it Mr. Tarantino’s most expensive film to date.
The R-rated movie skewed heavily male, or 58%. Once Upon a Time played younger than expected, with nearly 60% of ticket buyers between ages 18 and 34, according to PostTrak. It performed best on both coasts, with 6 of the Top 10 locations in Los Angeles.
Once Upon a Time is playing in 3,659 theaters, the widest footprint ever for a Tarantino film.
Sony also claimed 3rd place with Spider-Man: Far From Home, which grossed $12.2-M domestically for a global take of $1.03-B.
Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 4 followed with $9.9-M as it neared the $400-M mark domestically. Worldwide, the animated 4-Quel has now gathered $917.9-M on its run to $1-B.
Paramount’s, a unit of Viacom (NASDAQ:VIA) Crawl rounded out the Top 5 in North America with $4-M for a global total of $45.9-M.
Among the specialty films
The Farewell made the Top 10 in its 3rd weekend. The A24 release grossed $1.5-M from 135 theaters taking #10.
