Box Office: ‘Night School’ Books Open with $28-M

New animated pic ‘Smallfoot’ opens to $23-M, while National Geographic’s doc ‘Free Solo’ sees record-breaking numbers at the specialty box office ahead of ‘Old Man & the Gun.’

The comedy Night School laughed its way to the Top of the box-office chart, beating the overall comedy curse in opening to $28-M from 3,010 theaters earned a A- CinemaScore from audiences.

Overseas, Night School launched to $5.5-M from its first 19 markets for $33.5-M globally.

Warner Bros.’ new animated offering Smallfoot opened in 2nd place with $23-M from 4,131 theaters, it earned an A- CinemaScore.   Internationally, Smallfoot took in $14-M from 49 markets for a total box office take of $37 million.

The House With a Clock in Its Walls declined 53% in its 2nd frame to $12.5-M finishing Sunday with a domestic tally of $44.8-M and $65.8-M box office worldwide.

In its 3rd weekend, Paul Feig and Lionsgate’s hit A Simple Favor came in 4th domestically with $6.6-M. The black comedy’s North American take stands at $43.1-M through Sunday, and $62.9-M world wide.

New Line’s horror pic The Nun rounded out the Top 5 with $5.4-M for a domestic haul of $109-M. The horror offering topped a the weekend overseas with $16.2-M from 80 markets for a foreign take of $221-M and $330-M worldwide, the best box office of any film in the Conjuring universe.

The slasher film Hell Fest, from CBS films, distributed by Lionsgate, opened in 6th place with $5.1-M from 2,297. Audiences gave the film a C CinemaScore.

At the specialty box office

National Geographic’s critically acclaimed documentary Free Solo, which scored the best screen average YTD at $75,201.

Free Solo, launching in 4 theaters and fueled by a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, follows professional climber Alex Honnold’s quest to free-climb Yosemite’s El Capitan and is the latest title to participate in the doc boom at the box office.

Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 11/9 came DOA nationwide last weekend to just $3-M. In its 2nd weekend, Fahrenheit 11/9 tumbled 63% to $1.1-M from 1,719 theaters for a domestic box office of $5.2-M.

Dan Fogleman’s Life Itself, dove more than 65% in its 2nd frame to $770,085 for a 10-day domestic box office of $3.8-M.

Assassination Nation declined more than 805 in its 2nd weekend to $202,827 for a total of $1.7-M.

Fox Searchlight’s The Old Man & the Gun, said to be Robert Redford, 82 anni, last film, marked a screen average of $30,000, it debuted in 5 locations.

Neon’s Monsters and Men, helmed by 1st-time feature director Reinaldo Marcus Green. The police shooting drama, launching in 18 locations, posted a screen average of $7,277.
