Box Office: ‘Joker’ Beats ‘Maleficent’ with $18.9-M Vs $18.5-M


The 2 holdovers lead a quiet pre-Halloween weekend

Among new entries ‘The Current War’ blacked out with $2.7-M

In this Super Villain showdown, Joker edged out Maleficent: Mistress of Evil at the weekend box office.

Warner Bros. is estimating a North American gross of $18.9-M for Joker, while Disney (NYSE:DIS) shows Maleficent at $18.5-M. It’s always possible the order could change when final weekend numbers are tallied on Monday.

Joker‘s domestic tally is now $277.6-M, while it’s global haul is at $849.1-M. It’s now assured of passing $900-M globally.

Maleficent has been a major disappointment in the US, where its total to date is $65.3-M. It is faring better overseas, where it earned another $64.3-M for a foreign tally of $228.1-M and $293.5-M globally.

Disney began rolling out Terminator: Dark Fate in a handful of markets overseas. The event pic, which Paramount releases next week in North America, earned $12.8-M, led by the UK with $3.9-M.

Among the new offerings

STXfilms’ Countdown fared the best, placing #6 with $9-M from 2,675. The supernatural horror pic follows a young nurse who downloads an app that claims to predict exactly when a person is going to die, and it tells her she only has 3 days to live.

The reported budget is less than $7-M after tax rebates. Countdown earned a C+ CinemaScore.

Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) new action thriller Black and Blue followed at # 7 with $8.3-M from 2,062 theaters. Deon Taylor directed from a script by Peter A. Dowling.

Sony brought back an extended version of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The re-release garnered $550,000 from 1,674 locations.

The Current War: Director’s Cut arrived on the big screen 2 years after Harvey Weinstein premiered the film at the Toronto Film Festival.

The historical drama about Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse opened to a forgettable $2.7-M from 1,022 theaters. It is the 1st release from 101 Studios, the company launched by former Weinstein Co. executive David Glasser.

The Current War received a B CinemaScore. The film played older, with 55% of the audience over the age of 45, per PostTrak. 

The Current War, placing # 9, was beat by specialty pic The Lighthouse, which cracked the Top 10 chart in its 2nd weekend as it moved into a total of 625 theaters.

The A24/New Regency release earned $3.1-M for a 10-day domestic total of $3.7-M.

Among award contenders

Neon and Bong Joon-ho’s SKorean film Parasite continued to pull in strong numbers in its 3rd frame, grossing $1-M from 130 cinemas for a location average of $14,107 and domestic tally of $4.1-M. Parasite placed # 12.

Jojo Rabbit, moved up the chart to # 14 in its 2nd weekend as it upped its location count to 55 theaters, grossing $1-M for a strong location average of $18,500 and 10-day total of $1.5-M for Fox Searchlight.

Roadside Attractions scored 2 victories this weekend as Judy hit $21.5-M domestically to become the Top-grossing platform release of the year to date, and The Peanut Butter Falcon hit $20-M.


The Bruce Springsteen concert doc Western Stars from Warners opened to subdued $560,000 from 532 locations for an average of $1,008, the film’s total earnings stand at $1-M.

In partnership with Imax, Kanye West hit the big screen this weekend with the experimental, 38-min Sunday sermon film Jesus is King that’s tied to his new album of the same name. Jesus is King grossed an estimated $850,000, although those numbers could shift upward if Sunday traffic is busier than expected.
