Box Office: ‘Incredibles 2’ Opens with $180-M

Pixar does it again.

Disney (NYSE:DIS) and Pixar’s Incredibles 2 flew to a record-shattering $180-M from 4,410 theaters at the domestic box office at the weekend. The sequel score the biggest launch ever for an animated film it scored the 8th-biggest opening of all time, not adjusted for inflation, the biggest open in history for a PG-rated title.

Overseas, it debuted to $51.5-M from its 1st 25 markets for a global launch of $231.5-M.

Every Pixar film has earned some variation of an A CinemaScore, and Incredibles 2 was no exception, garnering an A+.

Universal, a unit of Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Amblin’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was the big winner overseas, earning another $173.6-M for an early foreign total of $370-M as it prepares to bow in North America Friday.

New Line’s male-led ensemble comedyTag earned $14.6-M from 3,383 theaters in its debut, becoming the latest R-rated comedy to do muted business.

Warner Bros, a unit of Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) Ocean’s 8, placed #2 in its frame with $19.6-M for a 10-day domestic box office of $79.2-M.

Disney’s Solo followed at #4 with $9.1-M, and  Deadpool 2 rounded out the Top 5 with $8.8-M.

A24’s horror pic Hereditary placed # 6 with $7-M in its 2nd weekend for a 10-day domestic box office take of $27.2-M.

Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) Superfly came DOA earning an estimated $8.4-M in its 5-day debut to come in #7.

Gotti, starring John Travolta as the infamous mobster John Gotti. The pic found little interest in many of the 25 cities where it played, grossing a scant $1.6-M from 503.

At the specialty box office

The Docs still impress: Won’t You Be My Neighbor? The Focus Features release, which focuses on the late TV personality Fred Rogers, earned nearly $1-M from only 96 theaters, while Magnolia and Participant’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg doc RBG crossed $10-M domestically.
