Box Office: ‘Hustlers’ Hustled $33-M,’Goldfinch’ DOA at $2.6-M

Hustlers rustled up a stellar $33.2-M from 3,250 theaters at the NA box office, the best start ever for STXfilms and the best live-action opening of Jennifer Lopez’s career.

Hustlers is based on real-life events chronicled in a 2015 New York magazine story and stars Misses Wu and Lopez as strippers that lead a band of dancers in a plot to drug and steal from their Wall Street clientele in Great Recession-era New York City.

Females made up 67% of Hustlers‘ audience, while Caucasians represented 36% of ticket buyers, followed by African-Americans (26%), Hispanics (27%) and Asians/Other (11%).

Warners’ The Goldfinch, came DOA after getting hammered by critics. The coming-of-age tale, which bowed at #8, earned a measly $2.6-M weekend from 2,542 theaters.

Focus Features’ Downton Abbey opened overseas a weekend ahead of its domestic launch, grossed $11.7-M from its first 17 markets.

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood reached $329.4-M at the global box office to become the filmmaker’s #2 film of all time.

At the specialty box office

Roadside Attractions and Armory Films’ The Peanut Butter Falcon continues to impress, crossing $15-M to become the #2 platform release of the year.
