Box Office: ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ #1 With $25-M, Next Came ‘Scary Stories’ Schools ‘Dora’ With $21-M

$CMCSA, $CBS, $LGF, $VIA, $DIS, $SNE

Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw stayed atop the box office chart for the 2nd weekend running, revving 5 new films to gross $25.4-M and cross the $100-M mark domestically.

Overseas, Universal’s big-budget action pic took in another $60.8-M for a worldwide take of $332.6-M. The franchise winner has always done bigger business internationally, and Hobbs & Shaw is no exception.

The new entries

CBS Films, eOne’s and Lionsgate’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was the only 1 to over-perform as it placed 2nd after earning $20.8-M. It earned a C CinemaScore, not uncommon for the horror genre.

Dora opened in fourth place with $17-M Paramount partnered with Walden Media and MRC on the movie. Dora earned an A CinemaScore

Jon Favreau’s The Lion King earned another $20-M domestically, making it good enough for 3rd place. The film celebrated several milestones in its 4th frame, becoming the biggest global release of all time from Disney’s live-action studio with $1.34-B in ticket sales, becoming the 2nd-biggest release of Y 2019.

Quentin Tarantino and Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, now in its 3rd weekend, came in 5th with $11.6-M for a domestic take of $100-M. It is the 1st original title of Summer 2019 to do so.

Meanwhile, the three other new Hollywood releases came DOA

Fox 2000/Disney’s canine dramedy The Art of Racing in the Rain fared the best, grossing $8.1-M to come in 6th it earned an A- CinemaScore.

New Line/Warner Bros.’ The Kitchen all-out DOA after bowing in 7th place with $5.5 -M, with disappointing B- CinemaScore.

 Brian Banks, opened outside the Top 10 with $2.1-M.

Brian Banks bowed at No. 12, just behind indie hit The Farewell, which grossed $2.2-M as it expanded into a total of 704 theaters for a domestic total of $10.3-M.

Neither film could top Bring the Soul: The Movie, a documentary about SKorean boy band BTS and their recent world tour. After playing in 875 cinemas, the doc earned an estimated $2.4-M.

At the specialty box office

Roadside Attractions’ critically acclaimed The Peanut Butter Falcon scored a location average of $12,108 upon opening in 17 cinemas.

Sony Pictures Classics’ After the Wedding opened in 5 theaters for a location average of $11,425.
