$250,000 G2 True North Stakes at Belmont, June 9

By Mike Rosen for Knightsbridge Bloodstock

Top sprinter Whitmore is the certain favorite in Friday’s Grade 2, $250,000 True NorthStakes at Belmont.  The Pleasantly Perfect gelding has won 5 consecutive sprints since his 37 length drubbing in last year’s Kentucky Derby.  The formula for his recent success is straightforward: enter 6 or 6.5 f races, occupy a patient stalking position in the early going, unleash a relentless drive in the lane.  Whitmore is pictured above edging away in Maryland Sprint Stakes at Pimlico on May 20.

Worrisomely for Whitmore’s opponents is that at just age 4, he is still
improving and stands on the brink of asserting himself as the best dirt
sprinter in North America.  Whitmore and pilot Ricardo Santana, aboard for the
last 3 wins, drew a favorable 8 post in the field of 9 and should find clear sailing at Big Sandy.

The 2017 edition of the True North is the fourth year it is raced under
allowance conditions.  Prior to 2014 it went as the True North Handicap and
has been previously won by Champions and Hall of Fame types including Speightstown, Groovy, and Gold Beauty.

The other contenders Friday are lead by the remarkable 7 y.o. gelding
Stallwalkin’ Dude who is 10 4 2 2 at Belmont and the recent winner of the
Diablo S. here, also at 3/4 of a mile.  Stallwalkin’ Dude employs a similar
style as Whitmore and they will not be far separated at any stage of the race.
Green Grotto is another 7 year old multiple stakes winning millionaire
carrying the top weight of 124 lbs.  The New Jersey bred surprised bettors and
touts with a wire-to-wire win at Aqueduct in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap in April that returned $110.00 for a $2 win bet.
