US Major Market Stock Indexes Finished Mixed


DJIA +2.8% YTD, NAS 100 +7.1% YTD, S&P 500 +3.4% YTD, Russell 2000 +4.4% YTD

DJIA +13.51 at 18312.39, NAS 100-8.41 at 5070.03, S&P 100-1.38 at 2127.82

Volume:Trade was above average with about 720-M/shares exchanged on the NYSE

US major market stock indexes finished mixed after spending the entire day near their flat lines. The S&P 500 settled lower by 0.1%, DJIA (+0.1%) edge up to another record closing high.

The healthcare stock sector (+0.5%) and financials (+0.7%) outperformed. The biotechnology stock sector struggled to keep pace with the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (NYSEArca:IBB) 360.60, +0.30 or + 0.1%.

The financial stock sector continued its outperformance as increasing Treasury yields that are expected to boost net interest margins for banks. Thanks to Tuesday’s gainer, the sector is now up 3.4% in May Vs a 2.0% gainer for the S&P 500.

Homebuilder stocks outperformed with iShares Dow Jones US Home Construction ETF (NYSEArca:ITB) 27.30, +0.19 climbing 0.7%.

The broader consumer discretionary stock sector settled just below its flat line.

The energy stock sector lost 1.2%, and settled behind the remaining 9 groups.

WTI Crude Oil finished lower by 3.6% at 58.08.

The US Dollar (.DXY) Index finished higher at 95.29, +1.07.

US Treasuries surrendered their gains in the morning after the April Housing Starts report beat expectations.

Economic data

  • Housing starts increased 20.2% in April to 1.135-M from an revised 944,000 from 926,000 in March, the consensus expected an increase to 1.019-M


The Weekly MBA Mortgage Index will be reported at 7:00a EDT, the FOMC minutes from the 28-29 April meeting will be released at 02:00p EDT.
