Toyota NYSE:TM Takes Global Lead From General Motors NYSE:GM

Toyota Motor Corp. outsold General Motors Co.and Volkswagen AG PINK:VLKAY last year, taking back the global sales lead after recovering from natural disasters and record recalls.
Worldwide sales at Toyota, including deliveries from its subsidiaries Hino Motors Ltd. PINK:HINOF, TO:7205 and Daihatsu Motor Co. PINK:DHTMY, TO:7262, rose 23% to a record 9.75-M units in Y 2012, according to a statement from the Toyota City, Japan-based carmaker. That compares with the 9.29-M units sold by GM and 9.07-M at Volkswagen.
Toyota has fully recovered from the earthquake and natural disasters a year earlier Japanese carmakers, including Toyota, will continue to benefit from a strong US market.
In Y 2008, Toyota ended GM’s 77-yr reign as the world’s largest automaker, holding on to the top annual sales spot until Y 2011, when it gave up the title after production was disrupted by natural disasters in Japan and Thailand.
Toyota traded at 4,340 Yen, unchanged from the last close, as of 2 p in Tokyo. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average slid 0.7% on the day Monday.
