Thaksin Shinawatra Hands Victory to Abhisit Vejjajiva
Abhisit Vejjajiva would be the happiest man in Bangkok today after fugitive criminal and alleged terrorist Thaksin Shinawatra said he would be at the helm of the Puea Thai Party.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal Thaksin said he intends to play a key role in running from afar his country’s economic policies if Thailand’s main opposition party wins coming elections.
But so far the Puea Thai Party can’t seem to find a single candidate, Mingkwan Sangsuwan seems to be on the out as he refuses to follow the orders of Thaksin.
Mingkwan Sangsuwan may not be Thaksin’s first choice as a puppet, in fact Mingkwan Sangsuwan is a very savvy businessman and unlikely to take the role of being Thaksin Shinawatra’s nominee Prime Minister.
Perhaps no one wants to run the country and take orders from a wanted criminal and alleged terrorist. The idea is so ridiculous not even The Wall St Journal can give it any credibility, the idea a fugitive leader, convicted of criminal offenses, allegedly involved in the terrorist burning of Bangkok, could run the nation from the protection of the United Arab Emirates, impossible!
The problems at Puea Thai are not simple, momentum has shifted in favour of Thaksin’s youngest sister Yingluck. About half of the opposition party’s 185 seats are smart enough to not want a close relative of Thaksin to be first on the party list, as that meant he or she would become prime minister if Puea Thai won enough votes to form a government.
For them, any person close to Thaksin would face fierce resistance from all law abiding citizens in Thailand.
This group believes that Mr Mingkwan is the better choice because his name puts Puea Thai at a distance from Thaksin.
They also have no confidence in the power of the red-shirted members of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, estimating that the real UDD figures could be no more than 200,000 rather than the seven figures claimed by certain groups.
It is a pity for Thailand that Mingkwan Sangsuwan can not run a proper “Thaksin Free” challenge to Abhisit Vejjajiva as a keenly contested democratic election would spur debate and idea’s that would be in the interest of the nation.
However the Thaksin Shinawatra influence will relegate the election to a farce, Abhisit Vejjajiva is now assured victory.
A brief history of Thaksin Shinawatra
Thaksin Shinawatra paints himself as the poor PM wrongfully ousted in a Military Coup by the evil and wealthy Bangkok elite that have close ties to the King. His minions, the Red Shirt leaders, cry how his removal was unfair as he was supporting the poor.
None of it is true, the fact is as Prime Minister he sanctioned the murder of thousands of people, he changed laws in favor of his businesses, he used public and private funds to buy votes off the poor and presided over the most corrupt government in Thailand’s long history.
Here is why Thaksin Shinawatra was removed and found guilty of corruption.
