Snow To Start In New York Today, Storm Blankets Northeast

NYC SNOWSnow will start falling in New York Saturday morning, then changing over to sleet and rain at night , as a quick-moving storm makes its way from the Midwest through the US Northeast.

New York may see 6 ins (15 centimeters) of snow before it turns to rain, which will hold down accumulation, said a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Areas of northern New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley may get 8 ins. Putnam and Orange counties may receive 10 ins.

Winter storm warnings, meaning severe conditions are imminent, were in place in parts of 14 states from Illinois to Maine, according to the weather service.

Winter weather advisories, which included warnings of icy roads and freezing rain, stretched from Nebraska to Rhode Island.

Most of the storm was expected to miss Washington and Baltimore, leaving about an inch before the snow turns into rain. An area from central Pennsylvania through upstate New York and into New England will get the heaviest snow.

Boston will probably get 3 to 6 ins of snow. Accumulations in the city will be held down because the precipitation may change over to rain or a mix of freezing rain and sleet.

Areas north and west of Boston may get 10 ins, according to the weather service. A coastal flood advisory has been issued for the east coast of Massachusetts including Cape Cod. Waves may rise to 10 ft with a 2-ft storm surge washing over roads and flooding basements, according to the weather service.

The heaviest snow will fall in Boston starting late Friday night.

Stay tuned…
