The sale of the legendary multi-disciplinary When the Moon is Orbed hammering for S$3.7-M at the Decmber Poly Autumn Auction in Beijing, Tan Swie Hian, 69 anni, earned the distinction of being the most expensive living artist in Singapore.
The sale took place at the 2012 Poly Autumn Auction’s Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art Evening Sale on Sunday,2 December, and places Tan, a Cultural Medallion recipient, in the record books as the 1st Singaporean artist to sell a piece above the S$1-M mark at auction.
Speaking to reporters from the Straits Times after the sale, Tan said: “Several masters, including Vincent van Gogh, did not live to rejoice over such an experience. I am lucky indeed and elated at my collector’s harvest.”
Tan’s oil painting of a Full Moon above a tree and glimmering lake edges out the S$101,800 ink painting “Singapore River Scene” by Lim Tze Peng, 89 anni, who held the record prior for the most expensive painting by a living local artist.
Tan completed the masterpiece, “When the Moon Is Orbed”, earlier this year after his critically lauded solo exhibition in Beijing in October 2011. http://tanswiehian.sg/
