US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress that interest rates will remain low; the catalyst that drove US stocks higher Wednesday. Despite Wednesday’s gains, the major indexes are still negative for the week after Tuesday’s decline, the largest in nearly 3 weeks.
The US SEC adopted a New Rule that restricts short selling in stocks that have fallen more than 10% on any given day, reining in players who bet on a stock’s decline/demise.
Crude Oil was strong on the day. It finished 1.3% higher at US$79.93 bbl, despite a larger than expected build-up in weekly Crude Oil inventories. US Treasuries had a lame session as a US$42B auction of 5-year T-Notes drew a yield of 2.395% and attracted a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.75 and an indirect bidder participation of 40.3%.
