Movie Review: “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”

This film from director Lasse Hallstrom, is a delightful love story with some pointed British satire, and is not about the fishing at all

The film is taken from a novel by Paul Torday, “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” is a satire, with a love story at its heart.

Emily Blunt plays Harriet Chetwode-Talbot, the London-based assistant to a Yemeni sheik, played by Amr Waked, who dreams of bringing salmon fishing and green fields to his land.

Given the mandate to make this happen, Harriet consults Alfred Jones PhD, played by Ewan McGregor, a charmingly sweater-vested government fish expert who thinks it a foolish idea.

Enter Patricia Maxwell, played by Kristin Scott Thomas, the ultra-efficient press secretary to the British Prime Minister who is looking for a good human interest story and suddenly the “foolish” project is under way, with our players making trips to Scotland and Yemen as Alfred and Harriet smile sweetly at each other and we learn what’s in store.

There are some mild complication as Alfred is married, but his wife, played by Rachael Stirling a one dimensional “Harpy” and Harriet having a boyfriend new boyfriend who has been sent out on a Top Secret military operation to Afghanistan and goes MIA, but all gets sorted out in good time, and for the best.

McGregor and Blunt are charming, and spontaneous. Kristin Scott Thomas, sharp performance keeps “Salmon Fishing” from being just a run of the mill romantic comedy, she is terrific.

This is a feel good movie. I enjoyed it.
