Miss Arkansas, Savvy Shields, Crowned Miss America 2017
The 21 yr old Fayetteville, Arkansas native is a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at the University of Arkansas where she majors in Fine Arts.
She dazzled the judges during the talent competition with a jazz dance to a song from the TV show “Smash” and a Q&A question about Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.
“If you’re trying to be leader of the free world, everything you say and do matters and all of your actions are held to a higher standard,” Ms. Shields said about Mrs. Clinton.
In a July interview Ms. Shields said, “Pageant girls and women, in general, are always striving, or it’s tempting to be striving, for perfectionism. You have to realize that you are imperfect and you are enough.”
As the Miss America, Ms. Shields receives a $50,000 college scholarship, and a 6-figure salary during her reign.
Miss South Carolina Rachel Wyatt was the night’s 1st runner-up.
The night’s 2nd runner-up was Miss New York Camille Sims, and the 3rd runner-up was Miss Washington Alicia Cooper.
The Top 15 finalists were: Kentucky; Washington; Massachusetts; Arkansas; South Carolina; Idaho; Iowa; Texas; California; Oklahoma; Maryland; New York; Tennessee; Louisiana, and Mississippi.
During a press conference after the ceremony, Ms. Shields thanked her family and fans.
The night’s celebrity judges including Mark Cuban, Gabby Douglas and Ciara praised Ms. Shields and congratulated her on her win after the event.
