Japanese Still Interested in Thailand Equities

The results of Japan roadshow showed that investors remained their confidence on Thailand’s economic situation, attracting more funds to the Thai capital market. Over 1,000 investors joined the event.

“Discussion with Japanese investors showed that they still have confidence in Thailand and are interested in increasing their investment in the Thai stock market, as the economic situation has tended to improve. They are particularly interested in real estate investment trusts (REITs), so SET showed them that foreign investors can invest in property funds in Thailand,” said SET President Patareeya Benjapolchai, reporting on the results of the roadshow with Daiwa Securities Capital Markets in the Daiwa Investment Conference Tokyo 2010.

Over 1,000 representatives from investment institutes, securities and asset management firms joined the roadshow. They met 142 of Japan’s leading companies and 44 such companies from nine other Asian countries, including two from SET: Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL and PTT Chemical PCL. SET was one of the eight Asian exchanges which joined the Daiwa Exchange Summit 2010, and used this opportunity to give information about Thailand’s economic situation and the Thai exchange last year. SET revealed that in 2009, the SET Index was expanded 63% year-on-year, with a market dividend yield of 3.4%, the highest among the ASEAN stock exchanges except for the Philippines. SET expects that the Thai economy will expand by 4% in 2010 due to the recovery of domestic demand and exports.

“SET also informed investors that the ASEAN linkage project should start operations within H1/2011. The project attracted Japanese investors, as they saw the benefits of an electronic trading link that would connect them directly with ASEAN exchanges. This link will attract funds from Japan to the ASEAN exchanges, including the Thai exchange,” said Ms. Patareeya.

“Joining this roadshow is part of our strategy to increase the liquidity of the Thai stock market in 2010. It was a good opportunity for SET to join the event and show investment opportunities and the potential of SET listed firms. In June 2010, SET will have roadshows in Singapore, London, New York and Boston,” concluded Ms. Patareeya.
