Japan PM Abe, Monetary Policy Can Fix Deflation
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday rebutted the view that monetary policy alone cannot tackle Japan’s long- running deflationary problems because of Japan’s declining population, in comments likely to keep pressure on the Bank of Japan to pump more money into the economy.
“I don’t accept the idea that the cause of deflation is linked to a decrease in population,” Mr. Abe said during a parliamentary session, dispelling the notion that the declining number of Japanese is the culprit of Japan’s long- running deflationary condition.
“Deflation is monetary phenomenon and therefore it can be tackled using monetary policy,” he said.
Shayne Heffernan of HeffCap said today, “Japan’s economic quick fix will not work, their problems are the very closed nature of the economy a real fix would be to open the doors”
Mr. Abe’s comments reflect the thinking of some of his advisers who have said supplying the economy with more money is Key to getting Japan out of the deflationary state that has plagued its economy for decades.
This view differs from opinions held by officials at the central bank and private economists who see the decline in the working population as a factor behind the nation’s deflation.
Mr. Abe also clarified his stance about the role the BOJ should play to end deflation.
“I assume that the BOJ has promised to be mainly responsible for achieving an inflation target as soon as possible,” Mr. Abe said.
