ITRI has a track record of successfully turning research achievements into commercial offerings, demonstrating a degree of discipline, insight and innovation rarely seen among research institutions.

ITRI has worked closely with the business world. Since its inception in 1973, it has been involved in many technology transfers, spin-offs, joint R&D, cross-licensing, consulting, exchange and other transactions.

Taiwan has a dynamic capitalist economy with gradually decreasing guidance for foreign direct investment by the authorities. The increasing labor costs continue to drive the labor-intensive industry to countries/regions with cheaper labor forces.

Taiwan’s future development will have to rely on further transformation to a high technology and internationalized economy. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, with its function to provide mechanism in promoting globalization, established the Open Innovation Center (OIC) to assist Taiwan firms in achieving competitive advantage through international R&D collaboration.

Open Innovation Center, governed by Ministry of Economic Affairs, is dedicated to provide assistance to Taiwan firms to gain competitive advantage in global market.

Its framework is designed for two purposes: collaborating with multi-national firms in Taiwan in carrying out research and development (R&D) activities, and developing innovative R&D skills in advanced technology. OIC acts as a liaison to link research institutes, Taiwan businesses, and academia with multi-national firms effectively to achieve the result-oriented competitive edge.

Technology R&D Achievements

Government-funded Science and Technology Projects

So far, over 272 projects have been accumulated through technical cooperation with ITRI.
Technology Cooperation and Expansion with International Enterprises ITRI has developed multi-lateral technology cooperation with such global companies as Telcordia, Microsoft Windows-CE, Air Products, and Corning of the United States, Japan’s Matsushida Electric, and Germany’s FESTO and CETECOM.

Certification and Training Center

DVD Certification Lab (the first A-class DVD certification lab in Asia, excluding Japan ). Wireless Communication Training Classroom, Agilent Communication Testing and Research Center, Matsushida Electric SD Certification Lab, etc.

Technology Levels

Regarding the technology level of our startup businesses, 79% of startups are engaged in technologies that are considered cutting-edge in Taiwan. For instance, PHISON Electronics Corp, developed 4GB Flash memory chip controller technologies, Gigalumen Technology Carp, developed a HID lamp, and Trendchip Technologies Carp, has developed a broadband network chipset.

2. International Exchange Achievements

ITRI is a key member of the Asian Science Park Association {ASPA}and the National Business Incubation Association {NBIA}. This and its close links with numerous well-known enterprises and research organizations in Taiwan and abroad mean that it is able to effectively promote international exchanges by its tenants and build channels for local and international cooperation.

3. Funding Achievements

ITRI helps tenants apply for government funding under the Small Business Innovation Research Program {SBIR}, Department of Industrial Technology, Ministry of Economic Affairs{MOEA}. For the period 1999 to 2005 inclusive, ITRI assisted with total accumulated funding of NT$245 million.

4. Educational and Training Achievements

ITRI holds entrepreneurship and related classes to help tenants foster human talent and broaden company horizons.
From 2003 to 2010, ITRI held over 163 training classes in a wide variety of subjects with over 8,000 participants.
From 2004 to 2010, ITRI held Victory The Convention for Technology Association {MJ Taiwan}. These provided funding platforms and various opportunities for tenant companies.
