Inside Investor organises seminar on Food Security

February 5, 2013, in Kuala Lumpur Live Trading News Partner Event

International media and consultancy company Inside Investor has realised through a number of high-profile business and investment events and through panels and discussions with sector experts that food security is becoming a pressing issue for the global community. There is a need to address these issues and make them a subject of discussion.

The Inside Investor Food Security Seminar, to be held on February 5, 2013, in Kuala Lumpur, is bringing the challenges the world faces with a strained global food supply to the table. Strategies need to be found for sustainable agricultural and food management in source countries. Other issues include sustainable water and energy management, as well as new agricultural methods such as genetically modified food and the impact of bioenergy and agrofuels.

Another sector of concern is how to ensure that imported food products are of acceptable quality and safe to eat. This is particularly related to the halal industry, where it needs to be ensured that halal practices are maintained. A number of Southeast Asian countries, namely Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei, are putting a focus on halal food processing in order to tap the growing global market for Shariah-compliant food, which is growing in and outside of the Muslim world.  It has to be determined how a global halal food and product standard can be reached, and what challenges investors face when entering global food production partnerships in halal.

Global food supply will also need to tackle the problem of obesity in a growing number of countries. Solutions for reducing the percentage of overweight and obese people as seen in industrialised countries, as well as those increasingly appearing in the Middle East and Asia, is a challenge of the future that goes parallel with nutritional education, change in eating habits and simply healthier food.

The Inside Investor Food Security Seminar will feature opening remarks by Malaysia’s Minister for International Trade and Industry Dato Seri Mustapa MohamedASEAN Secretary General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan. Panelists include Dato Seri Jamil Bidin, Chief Executive Officer, Halal Development Corporation, Dr. Hamad Saad M. Alsaad Al Kuwari, Advisor to the Chairman, Hassad Food, Qatar, Dr. Fawaz Al Alamy,  former WTO Chief Technical Trade Negotiator and Board Member Saudi Arabia General Investment Authority, Saudi Arabia, Datuk Hajah Norah Tun Abdul Rahman, Executive Chairman of Tanjung Manis Halal Hub, Malaysia, Professor Sayed Azam-Ali, Chief Executive Officer, Crops for the Future Research Centre, Malaysia, and Professor Dr. Winai Dahlan, Director of the Halal Science Center (HASCI), Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.
