I’ll Have Another wins the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby
Mario Gutierrez celebrates atop I’ll Have Another after winning the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby ahead of Bodemeister ridden by Mike Smith at Churchill Downs on May 5, 2012 in Louisville, Kentucky.
I’ll Have Another running in the middle of the pack in the home stretch ran down leader, Bodemeister, in the final furlong to win the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday evening.
Heavy rain fell Louisville overnight, leaving the track sloppy in the morning, but when race time came, the track was back at fast, and fast ran Saturday.
At the start jockey Mike Smith took the lead and rode Bodemeister to just that in front of the expected pace-setter Trinniberg, taking the 1st call at a very fast time of 00:22.32.
Rounding first turn and into the backstretch Bodemeister was the leader in front of Trinniberg by a couple of lengths with Hansen, and Daddy Long Legs next.
I’ll Have Another was running in 7th.
Bodemeister opened the lead rounding the far turn and entered the home stretch in front by 5 lengths on Hansen in 2nd, as I’ll Have Another entered 3rd on the middle of the track and gaining fast.
Bodemeister led at the final furlong but was fading after running the fastest 1st 5 splits in Derby history, and I’ll Have Another flew past him for the win.
Bodemeister finished 2nd, Dullahan ran 3rd; Went the Day Well finished 4th and Creative Cause came 5th.
I’ll Have Another is the 1st horse to win from Post 19, and it is the 1st Derby victory for jockey Mario Gutierrez in his 1st Derby ride.
Day belonged to I’ll Have Another, his owner J. Paul Reddam, his trainer Doug O’Neill and his jockey Mario Gutierrez. They are now on the Triple Crown path.
I’ll Have Another has a perfect 3-for-3 record as he head to Maryland and the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on 19 May.
