Once “Hot” Megyn Kelly Dampening Ratings at NBC for All
Megyn Kelly’s “Today” show ratings are off to a really slow start, and insider reports say she is affecting NBC’s, a unit of Comcast ((NASDAQ:CMCSA) morning viewership and execs considering making changes to stop the bleeding.
Ratings of Ms. Kelly’s 9:00a hour of “Today” have dropped 32% over last year’s numbers since she started as host on 25 September, and that viewership of “Kathie Lee & Hoda” in the 10:00a hour has dropped 26% as viewers tuned out during Ms. Kelly’s segment and do not tune back in.
Too many people are tuning out NBC. Hoda and Kathie Lee had been a bright spot in the mornings. Company people are alarmed.
The format for Ms. Megyn’s show does not make sense. Her show detracts from the ‘Today’ franchise, critics say.
Some of Ms. Kelly’s interviews on “Today” have not gone over well with viewers, including ones with Debra Messing and Jane Fonda.
NBC producers are considering switching “Kathie Lee & Hoda” to the 9:00a slot to keep viewers from tuning out too early. Another possible change may be to take the “Today” name off Ms. Kelly’s hour to avoid further damage to the brand.
“They don’t want her to tarnish the ‘Today’ show brand anymore,” an insider declared.
“The staff is miserable and know it’s only a matter of time before they are fired. “It’s easier to blame them, but the real problem is Kelly herself.”
