Punters hit back on the third day of the Cheltenham Festival after a string of well-backed favourites won.

Although favourite Peddlers Cross was turned over in the opening race, the eventual winner Sir Des Champs didn’t go unbacked but the damage was to come later in the day.

16/1 winner Cape Tribulation gave the bookies some respite in the Pertemps Final but four well-backed favourites on the bounce obliged soon after which mean punters have plenty to play with heading into the final day.

“The punters have roared back on the third day of Cheltenham which means honours are just about even heading into the Gold Cup day,” said Betfred spokesman George Primarolo.

Long Run heads the market for tomorrow’s Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup with the sponsors at 9/4 with Kauto Star next in the market at 9/2.

“As a young lad growing up in Salford I never imagined being able to afford to go to the Cheltenham Festival, let alone sponsoring the feature race,” said Betfred chairman Fred Done.

“It will be a very proud and emotional day for me and fingers crossed we will have a cracking race.”

Long Run’s stablemate Burton Port is a 7/1 shot, just ahead of Midnight Chase and Synchronised who are both priced up at 10/1.
