Hong Kong Jockey Club Buys at New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale

The Hong Kong Jockey Club bought six colts at last week’s New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale for a total outlay of NZ$1.5 million (approximately HK$8.4 million).

An attractive O’Reilly youngster was the first of the Club’s purchases. Lot 205 is a full-brother to the stallion Sacred Falls, who numbered G1 wins in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas, Doncaster Handicap and George Main Stakes during a top-class career in Australia and New Zealand.

The brown colt, knocked down for NZ$300,000 during the opening session on Monday, 30 January, is from the same family as last season’s G1 Champions Mile third, Packing Pins.

The Club secured four purchases the following day, the highest-priced being Lot 315, a handsome bay by the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas winner, Power. The colt’s dam, a six-time winner from 1400-2000m and runner-up in the G1 Doomben Cup, has already produced a smart half-brother in the form of 1400m Listed winner Inside Agent.

Earlier on Tuesday, the hammer fell the Club’s way for Lot 243, a NZ$220,000 O’Reilly colt out of the G3 winner Lady Chaparral. The dam, a four-time winner at 1400m and a mile, is a half-sister to G1 New Zealand Oaks heroine Bramble Rose.

And the session (31 January) also yielded an O’Reilly colt out of Promenade (Lot 355), a winning daughter of G1 producer and New Zealand Broodmare of the Year River Century; also Lot 393, a Stratum half-brother to Listed-placed juvenile All Sewn Up, from the family of G1 Blue Diamond Stakes second Seidnazar.

The Club concluded its Karaka buys on Thursday (2 February) with Lot 892, a Darci Brahma colt that is closely-related to three-time Sha Tin winner Right Call, by the same sire.
