Hollywood Box Office: Brad Pitt’s ‘Killing Them Softly’ got rare F CinemaScore from viewers

Hold overs; “Breaking Dawn– Part 2,” “Skyfall” and “Lincoln” dominate.

Brad Pitt’s Killing Them Softly bowed nationwide to a soft $2.5-M, coming in # 6, earning an F CinemaScore.

The gritty crime drama directed by Andrew Dominik, is just the 8th movie in history to receive the F grade, and the 3rd this year after horror pics The Devil Inside and Silent House.

Killing Them Softly will likely open to $7-M, a disappointing number even though the movie cost only $15-M to produce.

Pitt’s Plan B production company produced the $15-M Killing Them Softly, based on the book Cogan’s Trade, with Inferno Entertainment and Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, which put up much of the financing. The Weinstein Co. is distributing domestically.

Killing Them Softly stars Pitt as professional enforcer Jackie Cogan, who is charged with investigating a robbery at a mob-protected card game. The cast included Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini and Sam Shepard.

The movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May; its release subsequently was moved from September to November.

The holdovers continue to top the domestic box office, led by Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, which grossed $5.6-M Friday for a weekend gross in the $17-M range, and pushing its domestic take to $254.2-M.

MGM and Sony’s Skyfall continues to impress, grossing $4.9-M Friday for a North American take of $233-M The James Bond film should earn in the $16-M range on the weekend.

Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln took in $4-M Friday for a domestic total take of $74.2-M, followed by Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, which grossed $3.3-M on its 2nd Friday for a take of $39.7-M.
