Grade 1 La Brea Stakes Santa Anita Park Preview
The La Brea Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually since 1974 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Open to three-year-old fillies, it is raced over a distance of seven furlongs on dirt. A Grade I event, it currently offers a purse of $300,000 and is the last Grade I race for three-year-old fillies in the calendar year. The race is a feature of the Santa Anita Park Opening Day on December 26.
The Harlan’s Holiday filly Lightstream is the one to beat here, she gets back a little in her races but she has an unstoppable finish, Santa Anita Park will suit her style. Lightstream is experienced at racing at this level and she will definitely be there at the finish line.
A winner of the Grade II Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 22, Lightstream has never run out of the money, even in her last three graded stakes attempts. Trained by Brian Lynch, Lightstream was a second place finisher in the Grade I Test at Saratoga on Aug. 6 and ran third in the Grade I Mother Goose at Belmont on July 2. Julien Leparoux, aboard for her first two races, and also her most recent victory, will travel west and once again have the mount.
Lightstream is owned by Up Hill Stable, Head of Plains Partners, LLC and Little Red Feather Racing. In six career races she has amassed earnings of $457,000. Bred in Kentucky by Ann Marie Farm.
Coniah is likely one of the early leaders in the race, she was 3 wide in the Raven Run and covered a lot of extra ground, if Lightstream gets held up for a run Coniah could steal the race. Coniah is a daughter of Hill’n Dale Sire Harlington .
